The Modern Vintage Bathroom

We are starting some remodeling on the interior of our little house in the country.  

The bathrooms will be the first to go....and boy do they need to go.

  I have been looking over all of my clippings and design books for the right elements that will work in the small spaces but still feel open and uncluttered.

This is humble house, so I don't think we want to go too overboard with the design. 

 It should feel vintage but at the same time be modern and clean and 

definately not fussy.

These photos of wonderful bathrooms seem to have that certain something.

But in the end,

 I decided that the more minimal the design,

 more importance will be placed on the fixtures

and the more timeless the end result will be.

 These last two photos are the bathrooms of architect Elizabeth Roberts.

She currently lives in Brooklyn, with her family in a restored 1860s brownstone

But do these bathrooms feel right in a home of that age?

I really think they do!

Here are the elements we have purchased for our master bath remodel

Console sinks from Porcher Lutezia Series

 we will use two side by side

The faucet sets from Kohler, the Purist Series

 The freestanding tub is Randolf Morris

 and can be found at Vintage Tub and Bath

The tub filler is also from the Kohler Purist Series 

The shower system is from Hansgrohe  called Raindance

It has an exposed thermostatic valve and handshower

Toto 

And sconces from Schoolhouse Electric Co

This is called Rensselaer

And finally....

The floors will be a honed Carrera or Thassos 

in a stacked mosaic or basket weave

Got Bait? Lamps from vintage minnow buckets

 Here is a new lamp I worked up for the extra room in our little condo. 

 I  use this room as an office and it has a hide-a-bed couch for visitors...which I rarely have had since we moved.  Is there something I need to know?

These are vintage Old Pal bait/minnow buckets. 

 The graphics are wonderful and bright.  There's that red color popping up again.  

Each bucket is different, but the same size and shape.  

 For the shades, I used a vintage french dust skirt. 

The contrast detail at the top is original and we slightly shortened the length.

Using a plain linen shade as a base, 

we slip covered it with a single seam at the back and attached it with stitching at a few  spots along the top to prevent it from moving around.  

You could probably use glue as well and maybe skip the rear seam all together.

 My office set up is pretty bare bones but it works for now.  

I needed a really narrow desk in order for the couch to be folded out as a bed.

  This is a reclaimed wood product, actually a console, from Halo Styles that sits on wood saw horse legs.

The down side to this desk is I can't spread anything out and I haven't found a good solution for the printer yet...any ideas

?

I was thinking of a basket...maybe?

I know.... is my computer huge...or what!

The chairs are smallish, vintage wicker, with great old green paint

 I had a few yards of the Bennison floral left over from the dining room chairs and I like mixing florals together so I used it for these chair cushions.  

I added a 1/2 inch flanged welting for some detail.

 Keeping this room really bright and simple was the priority but it still has to function as an office and a bedroom.

Alicia's Pretty Powder Room: nostalgic and nautical

I was asked by a fellow blogger and neighbor here in Newport Beach to help with a face lift on a dated little powder room....

Of course I said Yes!

 Alicia and her family live in a wonderful neighborhood near the beach called 

"The Port Streets" by locals.  

Most of the homes were built in the 70's 

And most have been remodeled at least once or even twice at this point.  

 Alicia has fabulous personal style and her home is a mix of fun beach chic with a bit of the contemporary.  

She has young children so keeping things simple is a priority. 

 Don't you love the pelican print!

 This bathroom gets used quite a bit by the kids as well as guests and it sits right off of the living room and near the kitchen.  

We wanted to tie the colors together that Alicia has used throughout the main floor.  We also wanted something with some pop.

 Somewhere is a photo I took of the original bathroom...but I can't find it.  

Oh well, you get the idea....

 The room is ready for its makeover. 

Below is my great friend Barbara.  

Barbara has been hanging wall papers for over 30 years!  

Sorry for this terrible shot Barbara.

 If you think hanging wall paper is easy...try it.  

Especially with a giant print like this one.  

Getting the repeat and seams to blend flawlessly is a real art.  

Barbara has hung tons of wallpaper for me and she does it so beautifully.  I will share a few of those projects on another post.

 I think this room took Barbara about 3 hours, 

with about an hour to set up and prepare her paper.

 This print called Na Pali is from Thibaut.  

It happens to be one of their most popular papers.  

The cost is about $70 dollars per roll and this room took 8 rolls.

 Almost all of Thibaut's papers have matching fabric and usually come in 8 to 10 different color-ways. 

We are using the matching fabric on some pillows
and slip covers in the  breakfast room.

 One of the key elements in this room is the vanity which Alicia picked out from a company called J Tribble.  They manufacture these without the stone tops but Alicia chose a travertine just to make the upkeep easier.  It looks wonderful!

 The sconces are from Circa Lighting.  

This is called Ava.  I love the faceted glass

 The mirror came from Williams Sonoma Home and hangs from a knob and a leather strap...very fun.  

We actually got this on sale!

This was a great collaborative project, which are always the best.
