Thoughts on Design, Metropolitan Home and Chit Chat

31 comments:
Well Ok....lets just get caught up!
No excuses, just mounds of life stuff that creeps in and makes the days fly by.
Happily I wave bye bye to this crazy winter and yell hello to spring.

Honestly I have really struggled trying to find something relevant to talk about that doesn't wind up seeming, well, sort of irrelevant.
We have been working on a little house project in Santa Barbara (photos above) and I will be starting a kitchen remodel in about two weeks.

Unfortunately the only thing I have chosen thus far is this sink faucet.
Looks like I'm having commitment issues but hopefully I will snap out of it quickly or this kitchen project will be really long!

For those who have followed this little blog for the last few years, you know that we sold our Ojai ranch house and moved to Los Angeles for a year.

While in LA we rented a very cool condo and I started messing around with modern furniture
mixed in with a few of the usual "country" details....just couldn't help it : ))
I have loved modern design since I first popped open
a Metropolitan Home Magazine, many years ago.

It was the first magazine that really inspired me and I tried very hard to emulated the hip modern rooms Met Home featured.

The magazine published its last issue in 2009
but Hearst decided to relaunched Met Home last summer
aimed at Gen X and Millennial city dwellers.
Many current design trends remind me of Metropolitan Home features from the 80's and 90's.
But design is so much more consumer friendly now and sharing information, sources and competitive pricing are the norm.

And did I mention FREE shipping!!
Just about everybody ships furniture for free or for a flat rate.

On a young working mom's meager salary, most of my purchases were from Crate and Barrel and everything else came from thrift stores and antique malls.
Extra money was used for diapers and bouncy chairs, certainly not furniture.

Not much of that scenario has changed except I'm no longer young
and yes, I still like Crate and Barrel.
I especially like the latest collaboration with Ross Cassidy for the CB2 line

I have recently
splurged on a few new pieces of furniture
that are really modern but will work well in any setting

A Saarinen table...a classic
Here I paired it with inexpensive chairs from All Modern ,
a vintage Gas station sign from the 50's
and collectible American red ware circa 1880..ish
An Eames lounge chair in white Edelman leather...delish!
Looks right at home next to the firkin stack ;)

The coffee table is from Serena and Lily and the English bamboo side tables and some of the new antique pottery pieces are
from Revival Antiques in Pasadena

The large Steel Console is a fantastic piece designed by Giulio Lazzotti from Design Within Reach.
This is an office credenza but it works wonderfully  as a media console.
The couches and chairs I designed and slipcoverd in basic white twill
with pillows in orange velvet from Schumacher

I'm loving black accent pieces right now
and recently purchase the Antoccino shelving in black oak from RH Modern.
I don't have a photo of this in our apartment but it is a beautiful piece
and I can see it in so many different settings.

Now back to the story....we moved (again) from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area, a little over a year ago.
I know...we move a lot.  Believe me, we are really tired of it.  New places are really stimulating and exciting for the first few months but it just starts to get crazy and unsettling.

Today we are in an older, smaller rented condo but it's still pretty
and the location downtown is amazing.
Here is essentially all of the same furniture with a few new pillows.
It really looks different and yet works nicely in this older smaller space.

Interesting however, is that nothing looks very modern here.
The walls are a sage-ish odd green... I'm just living with it
but I think the paint really dates this condo.
In our spare time (?)  we work on the little house in Santa Barbara
Many of the things I have purchased for this house have a
more modern and spare feel as well.
While this is a 1920's Spanish Colonial house,
modern and current looks right at home
A dresser in the master bedroom is from Room and Board with swapped out hardware paired with a purple over-dyed rug

A lovely minimalist painting from Jean Jack mixes with vintage American pottery
and antique Hubley doggy doorstops

The walls are hand troweled stucco which are left unpainted and raw.

The original oak floor will be sanded and refinished in the next few weeks
and any thing but this orange will look sooooo much better...

I've changed out most of the lighting
including the chandelier in the dining area which just didn't work for me.
I know a lot of people would have kept it but it didn't allow
for any changes in the dining room configuration
which is important in a very small house.

Choosing artwork that has a connection to this style of house
but can work in a more contemporary setting has been fun and something of a challenge
because of the limited space.

Add in the garden we have less variety of plant material
and more linear sight lines, with clean walls and pathways

Vegetable gardens can look messy at times but the stone beds keep things in check
and the gate provides a private garden room entrance.
Now that the rain is finally letting up a bit
you can be sure I will be gardening more.
Tomatoes got planted a few weeks ago in February ....seriously Kelley?
don't you think its too early?
I guess we will find out

Live Moss Centerpiece DIY

A better title for this should be something like:
The Secret Life of Moss

Moss is one of those strange and wonderful plants that we often see on a hike
in a dark woodlands area

It also may be growing on the side of an old shed or an old tree stump.
It is not a fungus and is actually beneficial to most gardens
so if you have some enjoy it!

It is a plant in the simplest of forms lacking roots and leaves
It reproduces by sending out spores from little stem like blades that grow on top of the clumps.
In my never ending search for interesting plants
moss is currently at the top of the list!

It is usually associated with terrariums but personally I love it unadorned and out in the open
where you can brush your hand along the top.

So for this project I started with a simple large wood vessel
and 3 one gallon bags of live moss

I had this shipped from a grower but most floral supply stores carry this and occasionally you can find it at the nursery.
As you can see it was harvested right from the forest floor.
Moss is sort of like living compost

Many of the tutorials that I looked at recommended gravel as the base for your moss garden but I tried to mimic the actual material the moss would have been found on:
a combination of pine needles, small sticks and leaves and a mix of decomposing soil .

To support the soil and keep things tidy
I started by gathering some large plastic trash bags and forming them into a nice mound.

Staple your plastic or use heavy duty duck tape

I soaked my rich soil well, played a layer over the top of the plastic and then carefully unfolded and stretched the moss
along the top and down into the edges of the bowl

This is my first attempt and it looks rather one dimensional
but even simple projects are a learning curve!
The arrangement above is wonderful and my next bowl will contain more varieties and shapes
Here is Martha with her moss gardens in beautiful antique Faux Bois bowls she uses throughout her home at Skylands
I added a few little ceramic mushrooms...just for fun

The only real requirement to keep your moss alive is an occasional spritz of water
and somewhat low light
So even for those that are convinced they have
a brown thumb
 you can do this!

Hope you give this a try...
it's a really an easy and  relaxing one hour project...
and the perfect way to start your early fall decorating!

Own Your Style: A Cheerful Winter Wardrobe

14 comments:
The first couple months of every New Year is my favorite time to
clean and organize my closets.
Is is yours too?

No room is off limits.
Kitchens, bathrooms and pantry's are usually full of weird odds and ends
that end up in the garbage pail.
Why do I always have an extra can of pumpkin?
and what's up with all the red pepper flakes?

Clothes closets are always challenging because it's sometimes hard to giveaway a beloved skirt or handbag that might be the item you wish you had saved down the road.

Remember that denim skirt you made from a pair of jeans Sophomore year?
Yea that one....don't ya wish you still had it?

BTW....just for laughs google: home made jeans skirt...no words can describe these skirts

how about the tooled leather thingy from Cabo circa 1993
(clearly a case of too much Cerveza)

I actually have seen furniture that I have sold/consigned or donated show up in antique malls.
Always a weird feeling....especially when I see the prices!!
I recently consigned two side tables....which I received $250 dollars for....not too shabby

about a week later I ran into them (hello tables) in a rather upscale antique mall
priced at $1250

really?

weirder yet, I looked inside to see if I had left anything!

even weirder, the shop owner said
"can I help you with anything?"

to which I answered:
"yes, I would like to buy these amazing tables for
one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars"

just kidding about the last part
but I did peek to see if my book was still in the drawer

Last year I did a major purge and it felt really great.
So this year is more about organizing the things I wear over and over again
and updating accessories and basics

I tossed a few pairs of old boots, which was actually kinda hard ; )
truth:  I rescued a pair of Frye riding boots at the very last minute....I felt like I was saving a dear friend from certain disaster.
They will eventually find their way back into the donation box.
That's what boots do....they go walking

I did purchase these
this is a beautiful basic black boot that hits just below the knee,
they look great with everything and were soft and comfortable right out of the box...always a plus because I'm just not into blisters any more, I don't care how awesome the shoe is!

not sure if you can still find this boot
it's the Suzie boot from Sigerson Morrison

always a staple for me are light weight running/walking shoes
which look great with jeans and khaki's
These are New Balance 711's
love these in black and the other fun colors

hoarder alert...I own 3 pair!

I wear my fave vintage Donna Karen Collection (circa 2004) cashmere coat with everything...
it even looks good with pajamas ; ))

 love this coat from Theory
It has a wonderful menswear appeal

Invested (luggage is an investment) in some new duffels
and totes from Filson
In addition to being beautifully made these should last forever...
probably much longer than I will want to keep using them, cause forever is a really long time

I love/need a big cross body that I can open up and see everything I've thrown in there
and this one can double as a weekender in a pinch

Will someone please write a post about purses and analyze why we put so much stuff in them...
it's truly amazing.

It's as if we women were taught at an early age that the ability to cram your entire life
into a smallish bag
(which you will then carry around you neck until you need surgery)
is part of growing up...but I digress

I love white and cream in the winter too and found some great Levi 501's in white
these are a boyfriend fit and a bit distressed
super cute and comfy
found these at Macys.com ...I think they were around $50 dollars

add a few more lovelies like a great big chunky black sweater
and a floral scarf and your sure to feel cheerful
even in the rain
