The Front Porch: A country icon

 Porch: noun

A covered and enclosed entrance to a building

Our front porch in Ojai is a wonderful spot.
It didn't always look like this.
Here are a few photos of the front porch and how we changed it.....

Below the original...not much to look at, but still a nice spot.
The little lady who owned this home before us loved to sit out here too, I am told

I designed the front walk and the porch with local stone and used some rather unconventional rock to add to the whimsy of this area

The stones running through the center of the porch are ment to represent the arroyo running through the heart of the Arbolada in Ojai

Rock is a wonderful way to express different aspects of a home and its origins.
It can be artistic and unique but still be a part of the natural landscape

What do you are want your visitors to think when they walk up to your door?

..Just add the rockers!

Have a wonderful 4th of July Holiday
And my sincere thanks to all of my new and not so new followers!

I read each and every comment and try to get back to everyone as best I can!

Off to eat some burgers and drink some wine.....

  4. What a beautiful front porch! The stonework is gorgeous...I love the smaller stone work meandering through the large. Very inspired...

I miss having a front porch. It's a perfect place to sit with neighbors. Perhaps we have gotten away from them...as we continue to close ourselves off from others. Thank goodness we have a dog who needs walking. At least the "dog people" are out and about each day...

    Have a wonderful weekend...

  5. What a difference the white paint and black shutters make! I hate that blue...my Mom has the same blue on her house and I told her last week if it were MY house it would be white with black shutters! Great minds think alike I guess. And the rock work is exceptional. What does your front door look like? I see the screen (which I love) but does it hide a wonderful front door? I'd love to see what it looks like. Happy 4th!

  12. Hi Kelley,

You know how much I love whatever you do. This post is no different!!! I think if I ever built I would definately have a porch, I guess you always want what you don't have...We have a carport that connects the house to the garage and while I wouldn't be without it, I would so love a porch. Hope you have a great start to the week.
    Take care

  18. "What do you want your visitors to think when they walk up to your door?" What a terrific question! That's why walkways, entries, doors, doorknobs, porches, mailboxes, path lighting, etc.etc. are SO IMPORTANT. I want them to think "I'd like to live here, but if I can't then I am glad the owner is my dear friend who shares her home with me."

  20. I love the transformation. The funny thing is... My parent’s house in LA is an old Board n Batten ranch style... Reminds me so much like yours! I want one here in SD. Hopefully soon... Love your porch!!!

  21. I love that door with the leaf! I am also a self-confessed rock girl. Not the musical kind. But the plain old rock kind. I collect rocks, use them in decorating. And utilize them throughout my smallish yard. Nothing more natural. Has an essential yet simple beauty. Courtesy of the earth.
