Professional photography

It's time to give the garden a rest, at least for now.
We had an interesting experience last week.
Our home was photographed by a professional photographer.

It was actually for a couple of reasons which I will share later, but I wanted you to look at how the photographer framed each shot and how different they are from the photos I have used (my own) in  my past posts.   And how much more each shot allows you to see!
It was really fun to watch him work and he seemed to know exactly where to place the camera even though he had never been in this house.

It takes about 45 minutes to set up for each shot and he only took a few frames.
I found the one below really interesting because it moves from the breezeway into the master in a single shot.  He got the light coming through the windows too.

This shot of the living room sitting area was one of my favorites because it really captures the ceiling height and the crisp details.

Above is the media room, a fancy word for the spot we watch TV.  This was my least favorite photo because this room is very warm and cozy and I didn't get that from this photo.  What I do like is how the purple and aqua work together.
Above is the famous blue table I stalked.  He opened the french doors out to the front deck and framed the orchid in the photo.

 The kitchen below.
He had me style this shot with the wine and notice the flowers I posted about last week, on the island.
He also seemed to get an orchid blossom in each photo.
Again, if you look to the right you will see the living room in the shot as well.
This is another angle where he frames it to flow towards the little side patio with the fountains.
Grandma sleeps here! But just for a few days....

Design work space and blog central....

This is the master bath that I haven't shared because the angle was impossible for my camera, but he got most of it.
The stone is a cream french limestone.

I wasn't crazy about the photo below but he got the entire master in one shot, bedroom sitting room and bath..amazing what a lens can capture

What's interesting here, is that I used the grasscloth wall paper in only the sitting area to set it off from the rest of the room.  Now you can see why that works so nicely to separate that small special space.

The front deck looking quite snappy in lime green.
It was a perfect day for photos too!
Well, I'm not sure if this matters but I think I need a new camera lens.

best to all
and thank you for all the special comments on my last post,
xxoo

  5. I would love to know what lens you think would help you get better shots and also any other details on how to set up the room. Your home is beautiful. Amazing photos.

  6. I love the bright pops of color around a basically neutral landscape. The trunk in front of the daybed, the armoire in the room above the garage, the pillows and lamps (LOVE those!) in the media room, the painting in grandma's room are all the details that I gravitate to. There's no question your house is a showplace. Will we be seeing you in a magazine sometime soon?

  7. Kelley,
Your home would be impressive in any light, with any camera. Simply divine! I love the long interior views. It seems to have a really nice flow. The dining room is a room I would spend a lot of time in. And grandma's room is just my style. I am intrigued by the reasons for the professional pictures and will be waiting patiently for you to reveal them when the time is right. Have a good week!

  8. Hi Guys, and I have no idea what to buy for a new lens? I guess I missed my opportunity to ask.

I was basically caught up in the process. I am so glad you think the photos are good because I really liked them and the photographer was such a great guy too.

Hi Anne: I wanted to thank you for your kind thoughts on the last post. I feel like I should send you a check for therapist services!

BTW if you click on any photo it should show in full screen, please let me know if it's not working

  19. Kelley,
I knew it was a matter of time before a Professional Photographer would make it into your home....it's so wonderful..each and every nook!
I've ALWAYS been curious to know what type of lens YOU use though...b/c truly yours pics are some of the best ones on any blog....and I just can't seem to photograph a room like you do...plus it looks like you use an extra lighting source, like they do? Please let us know your secrets!!
Janet from Gardener's Cottage cracked me up...cuz she's so right!!
Would love to see the garden view out your office window b/c I'm sure it's adorable too!
Looking forward to the publication soon!
    Have a great week,
    Jeanette

  20. Now I feel really dumb for not looking more closely at his equipment. I do know he uses a Canon as do I. All of the lighting is set up seperately but there were some shots he only used natural light and no flash at all. He also uses digital editing in his studio.

The house does have a very neutral backdrop with little pops of color. The lamps in the first photo I just had made out of wicker covered jugs and then had the shades made with feedsack fabric, with the stripe running on the horizontal.

If you are interested in the fountain you can go to this link here www.ppebble.blogspot.com/2009/06/little-yardbig-idea.html.

And Janet! you big potty mouth...too funny

  21. Ooooh. How lovely! You know what I loved most? being able to see little details I had not seen before...like the beautiful art above the two chairs in the shot with the lemons...and getting to see more of the floorplan.

That being said...all of your photos are always beautiful too!

Planning to do the same with the ojai home?

  22. Hi Kelley,

Janet cracks m us - she pretty much sums it up! I really really hope your pics are for a magazine! I guess we'll all just have to be patient and see! I just had my engagement pictures taken yesterday and it's amazing what a professional see's through that lens that we don't! As always - I'm drooling!

    Melissa

PS I asked about your son's college because I went to Chico too!! And I know what you mean - that party school rep is so hard to shake!! My senior design class actually helped design part of the building he was standing in front of! : )

  23. Gorgeous! and it is nice to put the floor plan altogether! I hope those photos are for a magazine and not a real estate ad! (although it might be fun to tag along on a new project hmmm...)
I agree I would like to know what camera and lens you use and when and if you use additional light sources.
you should direct the photographer to your blog so he can see the comments and maybe even answer the questions?
